Frequently Asked Questions

  • Our trips are all-inclusive for just this reason. We believe learning can take many forms, so we work it in throughout the weekend. Every course is different, but the following gives us 8 contact hours:

Saturday might start out with a presentation over breakfast, giving you something to think about during the run when we head out afterward. Lunch on the trail will include a guided discussion. Once back at home base, showered, and comfy, we’ll do some demos, maybe practice some techniques. We’ll have a guided learning activity over apps and beverages, a presentation at dinner, and a moderated discussion panel afterward. After relaxing in the hot tub, we’ll ask everyone to complete a written reflection before bed.

  • Our courses have been pre-approved for 15 units of Level 1 continuing education by the California APTA. This pre-approval is accepted by the following states:

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wyoming

Our courses meet the standards for 15 hours of continuing education by most state physical therapy boards. Please contact your state board for details on their specific requirements.

  • Each course will have a more specific cost breakdown depending on location, season, and length of course, but in general for a 2-day course (arrive Friday evening, depart Sunday afternoon):

    $1250-$1500 Program Cost

    • $400-$500 - housing (may vary depending on availability of single v. shared rooms)

    • $450-$500 - guiding

  • As of right now, yes. However, we have plans for much more! Contact us if you have an idea for a course!

  • Please note that because Trailhead Learning Collective courses are limited to a small number of attendees, our cancellation policy is in place to help our attendees, our partners, and us alike to share expenses that may arise from unexpected cancellations. Due to the advanced nature of our bookings, we cannot make exceptions to our cancellation policy. Montana weather and trail conditions are often variable; trips are not cancelled due to weather or conditions.

    1) Full payment is required at time of registration. If you withdraw from the retreat more than 90 days before the start of the retreat, you may either transfer your registration to another course within 1 year, or receive a refund minus a $200 processing fee.

    2) In the event of withdrawal with at least 30 days notice before the start of the course, you may either transfer your registration to another course within 1 year, or receive a 50% refund.

    3) Requested cancellation within 30 days of the start of the course is not eligible for any refund or transfer.

We strongly recommend that you purchase trip insurance. Unexpected events do arise and travel insurance is very reasonable. Insurance on a $2000 adventure course will cost between $95 and $1250 depending on age. There are many good travel insurance providers, but we recommend AXA Insurance as a good option.

  • Our courses combine discussion-based learning with outdoor adventures. We will not cancel for weather, so be sure to check and prepare for inclement conditions. For running adventures, we recommend bringing running clothes for two days, including both shorts and tights, tanks and long-sleeves, and a light jacket at minimum. Our runs are not races—we will be stopping to regroup, take in the views, and chat, but we do not have aid stations. We recommend that you bring a hydration pack. We will be providing Scratch nutrition products on the trail, but if you have a favorite option feel free to bring that as well.

For the course content, we will have lab and experiential learning activities, so you will want comfortable clothes appropriate for movement. Don’t forget toiletries and medications! If a hot tub or lake is mentioned in the course description, you’ll also want your swim suit!

We will have a chef on-site for meal prep, and we will be calling you to discuss food sensitivities and preferences. We will not be providing alcohol.

  • Our courses are built around adventure and community. Some weekends will allow for multiple options, and others will not. Our numbers are limited by the need for small-group discussion, but also by how many people our Forest Service permitting allows us to bring on the trail. For running adventures, we expect everyone to run at different speeds, and we will be regrouping frequently. However, some routes are thru-runs, so everyone will need to be prepared to complete the full distance. Same for hiking adventures!

Regardless, if you feel the need to just chill in the hot tub or take a nap instead of heading outside, that is absolutely fine! Our retreats are about taking care of ourselves, not checking boxes!

  • Our teaching model and our permitting both require that we limit the number of people per course. We will have a waitlist, however! If someone cancels, we will be calling the first person on the waitlist.
